The ship “Joseph Green” sailed from Peterhead for the Greenland Fisheries on the 20th of February 1852. John MARSHALL was harpooner on board. This is the story of the crews survival after the ship was lost.

The ship “Joseph Green” sailed from Peterhead for the Greenland Fisheries on the 20th of February 1852. John Marshall was harpooner on board. This is the story of the crews survival after the ship was lost.

 

Aberdeen Journal - Wednesday May 19 1852

 

 

As was the custom John Marshall needed a Character Reference after leaving every ship. This was given to him by Robert Arbuthnot – the manger for the Owners of Joseph Green.

                        I hereby certify that John Marshall – Seaman- was a harpooner on board of the Ship Joseph Green – of Peterhead, on a voyage to the Greenland Seal & Whale Fishing this year – and that during the said voyage the ship was unfortunately Lost.(during a Gale of Wind). Among the ice – on the 20th december – at which time the Master – Captn Alexr Stewart, & one of the Seamen was drowned – the remainder of the Ship’s crew – were saved by getting upon the Ice – abandoning the ship - & having no time to save any of their clothes or any thing belonging to them – they remained on the Ice. For two days & Nights – exposed to all the rigours of a Storm & Wind – Frost & snow after which they were – rescued & taken on board of the Ship Mazinthien of Peterhead & distributed among the other ships – at the fishing- the said John Marshall was brought home to Banff in the Felix of that port –

            Given under my hand at Peterhead – this Twenty Eighth day of May –Eighteen hundred and Fifty two years –
