The Mate was John Marshall. During the whole period they had caught no fish, seals or whales and were only able to survive because of the knowledge that John Marshall had of the food caches placed by his father - also John Marshall |

Initially he joined the Mechanical Transport Depot at Grove Park, Lee, London and was stationed at various locations before being shipped to France in August 1918. |
